On June 2, 2005, around 5:20 p.m., a powered-paraglider pilot flying near Mount Olive, Alabama observed a large cigar-shaped craft with a horizontal dark band and faint “fog” envelope hovering silently at approximately 500 feet AGL over former strip-mined coal land. He observed for roughly 30 minutes, then nearly lost his wing to a sudden severe wake-turbulence event as he turned back toward his landing zone. The object disappeared during his landing approach and reappeared in the same position when he looked back. The case has real strengths (qualified pilot witness, sustained observation, genuine wake-turbulence event) and a real structural weakness (the “1,000-foot” size estimate exceeds the largest airship ever built). A small dirigible or surveillance airship with the size dramatically overestimated is the leading mundane candidate.
