Note: This page’s source material (a secondary “famous UFO cases” compilation) describes the same January 20, 1988 Knowles family incident on the Eyre Highway, but contains several claims not supported by the more thoroughly documented version of this case already on this site:

• The claim that the recovered grey powder “contained chemicals very similar to those that NASA uses to coat the surface of the space shuttle” does not appear in Bill Chalker’s detailed investigative account or in the reporting on the actual laboratory analyses (a TV-station-commissioned lab found no significant dust; separate researcher-obtained samples analyzed by NASA scientist Dr. Richard Haines found interior and exterior dust differed from each other, but no analysis confirmed anything unusual or NASA-related about the material’s composition). This appears to be an embellishment introduced in secondary retellings of the case rather than a finding from the original investigation.
• The “electrically charged tornado” explanation is not mentioned in the more detailed investigative account and appears to be a theory added by this secondary source.
• This version omits independent witness Graham Henley, the truck driver who separately observed a similar light nearby and later corroborated physical damage to the family’s vehicle — a significant piece of corroborating evidence present in the fuller account.
