The sky was clear, moonless but not without a scattering of low clouds, when something caught his attention hovering over an Army plant roughly a thousand yards from his house.
What struck him immediately was its stillness. A warm breeze was blowing steadily in from the sea that night, and yet the object simply held its position, motionless, at an altitude he judged to be somewhere between five hundred and nine hundred feet. It wasn’t producing its own light — rather, its underside, facing the ground, showed bright, while the far side remained in shadow, a pattern consistent with the object simply reflecting the bright lights that ringed the military plant below it.
Mr. F.C. considered the possibilities and ruled them out one by one: not a balloon, not any conventional aircraft he could account for.
