Between 10:00 and 10:30 p.m. on March 4, 1998, Donna stepped onto the front verandah of her family’s home on Riverbank Road, Southgate, NSW — roughly 20 km north of Grafton — for a cigarette. With a broad, open view to the northwest, she noticed a very bright white light just above the horizon, roughly 2 kilometres away, and called her husband Rick out to see it. The two watched together for about an hour; Rick continued watching alone until about 1:30 a.m. Donna also brought their 12-year-old daughter outside specifically to independently confirm what they were seeing.
