Pottstown, Pennsylvania:
Three F-94 Crews See a Pear-Shaped Object and a Faster Delta Companion, July 23, 1952
At 8:40 on the morning of July 23, 1952, three two-man F-94 interceptor crews over Pottstown, Pennsylvania watched a large silver object shaped like a long pear with two or three squares beneath it. It flew at 150 to 180 knots. Around it flew a smaller object, delta-shaped or swept back, moving at 1,000 to 1,500 knots.
The Pottstown, Pennsylvania F-94 sighting is a daytime report by six trained airmen, filed as Project Blue Book Unknown 1554. The crews describe a much faster object circling a slower one.

Detailed Report
The Pottstown record gives a compact description. The two-man crews of three USAF F-94 jet interceptors saw a large silver object, shaped like a long pear with two or three squares beneath it, flying at 150 to 180 knots (170 to 210 mph). A smaller object, delta-shaped or swept back, flew around it at 1,000 to 1,500 knots (1,150 to 1,700 mph). The time is 8:40 a.m. on July 23, 1952, and the case is Blue Book Unknown 1554 in the Berliner list.
A partial fragment of the same description appears in a Blue Book text file I checked: a “silver object, shaped like a long pear with two or three squares beneath it, flew at 150-180 kts.” The sources I could reach do not give the crews’ names, the altitude, the duration or the weather.
RESEARCHER’S NOTES
Six Airmen and Two Speeds
- The speed contrast: A large object near 170 knots and a small one near 1,000 knots flying around it is the detail that sets the report apart. The speed figures are estimates made from the cockpit.
- Three crews: Three F-94 crews are three sets of observers in different aircraft. The record does not say whether they reported separately or together.
- The shape: A long pear with squares beneath it is an unusual description. The squares could be structural features or reflections; the record does not say.
- Daylight: The sighting was in the morning, not at night, which removes most light-based explanations.
- Limits: No crew names, altitude or duration appear in the sources I used, so the account cannot be tested against known aircraft in the area.
Pottstown is a short, specific report from a large group of trained observers. It earned an Unknown because nothing in the Air Force record matched it.
A large silver object “shaped like a long pear with two or three squares beneath it.”
