1956: Ombues, Entre Ríos, Argentina: The Rider Who Was Invited Aboard

Riding home on horseback late one summer night in 1956, an anonymous Argentine farmhand was approaching an area called Ombues, near the town of Viale in the province of Entre Ríos, when he noticed two men standing by the road. Behind them, on a field past a barbed-wire fence, sat a nearly square dark machine. One of the men walked toward him with a friendly gesture and invited him along for a ride. The horse stopped as if ordered to. The witness felt a calm compulsion to agree, climbed down, tied the horse to a fence post and followed the men inside.

What followed was a short flight over the nearby town of Seguí, a docking with a much larger craft in the sky and a conversation with a third being who seemed annoyed that the witnesses had been brought along. He was told that his visitors came from a distant place, that food was scarce there, and that in five years there would be mass landings. He was also told that before that, smaller beings would come ahead to announce the arrival. He was warned to forget most of what had happened — and largely did. Behind them, on the other side of a barbed-wire fence in an open field, a nearly square dark machine sat on the ground. No lights, no sound.

One of the men approached using friendly gestures and without introducing himself invited the witness to come for a ride. He told the men he would go along as long as they brought him back early, because he had things to do in the morning. As he dismounted to tie his horse to a fence post, the animal stopped dead, as if it had received a command to halt, and simultaneously the witness felt a strange calm and a sense that he should do what he was told. He followed the men into the craft.

Inside the smaller vessel he saw a command console fitted with small levers, and windows along the inclined sides through which he could look out. The craft emitted a dull hum and lifted off. It flew low enough that when they passed over the nearby town, one of the beings pointed at the lights below and asked what the place was called. He told them it was Seguí, and he could clearly see the lit-up houses below despite the late hour.

The small craft then ascended to a large, brightly illuminated mother ship. At the entrance inside, a third being waited. He was dressed the same as the other two. This one appeared to be in authority, and his first reaction upon seeing the witness was annoyance. He asked the others why they had brought him. They said simply: “This is what we found.” The leader replied that they might have noticed the witness was not particularly intelligent, but he then turned to the witness himself and spoke pleasantly, telling him not to be afraid and that he meant no harm.

The leader explained that they came from a very distant place where humanity had apparently originated. They had come to seek food, which was scarce on their home world. The witness is anonymous. Without Picasso’s original source notes, the provenance of the account cannot be verified.
Unusual elements: Several details stand apart from standard 1950s contactee narratives. The leader’s irritation at the witness being brought aboard, the curt exchange between the beings (“This is what we found”), and the explicit instruction to suppress the witness’s memory before release are atypical of the era’s smooth, benevolent contact stories. They give the account a specific, mundane texture.
Physical trace: The 11-meter ring of flattened plants in the sunflower field is the only physical element. Physical trace evidence is significant when independently verified, but in this case only Picasso’s report describes it.
Hynek classification corrected: The previous version of this page classed the encounter as CE-V (voluntary, bilateral contact). That classification requires the human to initiate or fully consent without compulsion. Here the witness’s horse was stopped, the witness felt induced compliance rather than freely chosen consent, and his memory was deliberately suppressed afterward. CE-IV — an onboard experience with reported physical and psychological effects — is the more accurate classification.
